Named for its owners Justin and Brooke Neufeld, the wines of JB Neufeld have become one of the focal points of Washington State’s Yakima Valley AVA. Justin is also the winemaker and vineyard manager for Gilbert Cellars, and the JB Neufeld bottlings are a project of passion for both him and his wife. With humble beginnings in 2005, the wines live up to the family motto of “Dedicated. Thoughtful. Precise.”
Focusing his efforts entirely on Cabernet Sauvignon, Justin looks to display the full range of Yakima Valley’s complex terroir by offering wine lovers an opportunity to enjoy unique examples of Cabernet made in the same style, but from different vineyard parcels. The barrel program is not left to chance. French oak barrels with a very light toast are used to frame Justin’s wines. The oak profile complement the meticulously crafted fruit without overwhelming it.
The winery currently produces limited quantities of their acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignon every year. Jeb Dunnuck of Wine Advocate recently awarded the JB Neufeld 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon with an outstanding 92 points, “Another terrific wine, Neufeld’s 2012 Yakima Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is the least expensive of his three wines, yet was my favorite in the lineup. Made from 89% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Cabernet Franc, it has a pretty, perfumed, elegant and medium-bodied style to go with lots of black raspberry, lead pencil, graphite and wild herbs. I love the purity here, and it can be enjoyed now, or cellared for a decade.”
