“Severine Pinte is the winemaker behind two high-end Okanagan properties: Le Vieux Pin and LaStella. The former Rhône specialist is currently making some of Canada’s top Syrahs.” — Dr. Jamie Goode
Located on the esteemed Black Sage Bench in Oliver, British Columbia, Le Vieux Pin is focused on non-interventionist winemaking to create their award-winning portfolio of wines. Named after the lone old-growth pine tree overlooking their estate, the winery has become synonymous with Syrah as well as other prized Rhone varietals.
The winery has holdings spread out across the Okanagan Valley, each unique vineyard capable of bringing a sense of place to their wines. Borrowing classic techniques, inspired by their winemaker Severine Pinte‘s traditional training in Bordeaux. Le Vieux Pin uses of traditional French winemaking methods to capture the bold New World character distinct to the region. Their reserve tier, aptly named Equinoxe, feature single varietal wines made with meticulous care. Production levels are kept small, and the varietals in this award-winning line are only bottled in outstanding vintages. In addition to Equinoxe, the winery is also known for their Rhone-style wines blends with a particular focus and on Syrah. Winemaker Severine Pinte sources Syrah from five vineyard sites, and thus five markedly different terroirs on opposite sides of the Okanagen Valley that go into the Cuvée Violette, Cuvée Classique, and Equinoxe wines.
Le Vieux Pin has quickly become one of the Okanagan’s most prestigious estates. Enthusiastic reviews from classic publications Decanter and Wine Enthusiast have put Le Vieux Pin on some of the most renowned tables around the world. Most recently, in a trade event conducted by Jancis Robinson’s Purple Pages, Le Vieux Pin received high praise for their both their 2013 Syrah Cuvée Violette and 2010 Equinoxe Syrah.
These are superb wines with real definition, and count among the country's best. They are quite northern Rhône in style, but they also have a bit of Okanagan about them. Three different Syrahs are made: the floral, perfumed La Violette, then the Classic Cuvée (which ages well), and finally, the Equinoxe, which takes things up a bit in terms of concentration and structure. — Dr. Jamie Goode
